Elk Forest Project
Post-Completion Drone Images of a multi-disciplinary Slope Stabilization and Patio Replacement Project on the Elk River in Cecil County, MD.
SECI performed an engineering geologic evaluation of a failing slope at this residence, provided a survey and fully engineered site plan to stabilize the slope and replace the damaged deck, retaining walls and patio with a new EP Henry Diamond Pro wall. Working closely with the contractor Mr. Clay Stubbs of Bristoll Plantation, the project was a huge success and the property owners are pleased.
SECI also prepared the landscape plan for restoration of disturbed areas in the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area Buffer and adjacent steep slopes.

Coastal Geology Meets Surveying and GIS
Where: Calverton

SECI was engaged to assess the vulnerability of three coastal high-value cultural resource sites in Maryland. SECI used a combination of field survey, geological assessment and GIS based techniques to determine the extent, rate and characteristics of shoreline change. In this case, SECI determined that the average rate of shoreline recession was approximately 1ft/year due primarily to the susceptibility of non-cohesive granular soils to wave action and storm surge.

Dewitt Army Hospital Demolition and Restoration
SECI provided pre and post construction as-built surveys, demolition plan, restoration grading, and Erosion and Sediment Control plans for the demolition and restoration of the approximately 5-acre Dewitt Army Hospital (DAH) site at Fort Belvoir. Built in the 1950’s, DAH had been empty and unused for several years since the new hospital was completed. Logistical challenges included requirements to “balance” the cuts and fills to include crushed concrete, discovery of unrecognized Asbestos fire proofing and the below grade attachment to the Active Warrior Treatment Center to remain.

Where: Several National Park Service acquisitions along the Appalachian Trail; this one in particular being near Roanoke, Virginia
SECI was engaged to provide pre-demolition as-built surveys and SWPPP’s with erosion and sediment control Plans for several National Park Service acquisitions along the Appalachian Trail including this one near Roanoke, Virginia. Logistical challenges included a non-load bearing bridge culvert, over a mile of wet unimproved farm roads through private property, ½ mile of ATV trails, excessively deep slopes, brush and trees. With access agreements and our approved SWPPP and Erosion and Sediment Control plans in hand, the contractor effectively executed the project using Mabey portable site bridge to protect the bridge and a specialized ATV to haul materials and equipment up, and demolition debris down the mountain

Quarry Hydrogeologic Study
Where: A hard rock quarry in northeastern Maryland
SECI recently completed a Hydrogeologic investigation for a hard rock quarry in northeastern Maryland. The investigation was designed to model the future groundwater withdrawal necessary to keep the quarry dewatered. Stream flow measurements, a stream water surface profile, water level readings in onsite wells and the quarry sump were used to calibrate the model run using Groundwater Vistas modeling software.

Sampling Compost Feedstock
Where: Blessings Blends
SECI personnel collecting composite samples of idle “pre-compost” feedstock pile for a client in Sussex County, Delaware to assess the nutrient value and concentrations of undesirable metals and organics. Testing showed that this material was safe for composting. The material is blended with shredded wood, yard trimmings and other ingredients to prepare various Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) rated compost products. This is a sustainable and a beneficial re-use of organics that would otherwise be directed to landfills.
